When it comes to making a career change, you need it as your one big chance to present yourself and the reasons why you want to switch up your career. The better you explain your reasoning, the more likely it is that the HR team will offer you a chance. There are a couple of ways to do this, starting with the opening lines.Start your letter with a bangYou need to start with a bang Instead of opening your cover letter in a generic way, by saying that youre undoubtedly the best person for the job because of xyz reasons, think of a more explosive/fun way to grab the HR managers attention.Put yourself in the HR teams shoes. What would you like to know about a surprise applicant and what would make you stop and take the time to read their cover letter? Maybe you have a story about the moment you realized that you wanted to pursue this new career, or you have a quote that sums up you or your decision-making? This is your chance to impress, so go for itTake center stageAfter youve made a great first impression with your opening lines, its time for you to take center stage and make the next part all about you (ju st make it short and sweet). Take a look at our article aboutgiving yourself an edgeto help you with this.Focus on the skills you already haveWhats your superpower? Are you super organized, a great motivator or an experienced salesperson? Here, you want to emphasize the skills and/or experience you already have that you will bring to your new role. Also, think outside the box. If you think youve learnt specific and important lessons or skills in your former job that dont immediately translate into the new one, tell the HR manager why you think these are important and how they make you an attractive candidate for this job.Be honestNows your chance to share the story behind the career change. Was there a moment when you suddenly realized you were in the wrong job? Were you encouraged to make the move by a friend or family member? Did you always dream of this career but never felt confiden t enough to take the plunge? Have your priorities changed now that you have a family? Whatever your story is, you can bet that the HR team will want to know. Just write this part from the heart.Focus on the positivesSince youre making a career change, theres likely to be a few skills you dont have yet. Whatever you do, make sure that you dont apologize for this. Turn it into a positive as much as possible by telling the HR team how eager and excited you are to learn new skills. Find out more about how to do this, here.Make a big closing argumentTo wrap your letter up, use the last couple of sentences to state your closing arguments. When a Layoff Leads to a Better Life

When a Layoff Leads to a Better LifeWhen a Layoff Leads to a Better LifeMultiple layoffs lead to better jobs and more income for one national sales manager.Lynn Hancock has developed a resilient coat of armor. Early last year she found zu sichbeiself out of a job for the third time since 2001, when she welches informed that zu sich position at a privately held consumer electronics firm would be relocated. Hancock a Virginia native who resides in Mechanicsville, Va. welches by then a seasoned and savvy job hunter. She knew how to launch a full-scale campaign to find not only alternative work but an ideal position with the highest base salary and earning eignung she has had to date.It has been my experience that if you are good at what you do and you believe in yourself and your skills, and can adapt easily, there is always something out there, said Hancock, and in many cases, it may take a while but it can turn out to be something that can be better. Progressively, my positions have been better opportunities for me.Unable to relocate a virtual searchA principal mandate for Hancock was to find a job in Virginia. Relocation was not an option. For that reason, when she signed up on Ladders, she conducted her search in the virtual/travel option. This enabled her to secure a home-based position, something that she has enjoyed in her previous jobs since 1991. I just wanted to maintain that continuity. I was able to achieve that by looking for virtual/travel positions through Ladders which was very important to me.She lost no time getting her search underway. Job opportunities, Hancock said, should be pursued the day they are advertised because first respondents receive the quickest recognition. Only the positions she responded to on the same day they had been posted proved to be the most promising. She received a response within 48 hours and in every case was called in for an eventual interview.A pre-emptive approach also served Hancock well. She began her search a s soon as she caught wind that something might be happening within her organization. As a supplemental action in her job-search strategy, Hancock joined SalesLadder before her last day in her previous company on the recommendation from a co-worker. When she was laid off, her approach to finding work was already in place and multipronged. Hancock began researching firms she thought might be a potential fit, identifying companies where she might be able to create a position for herself and working with an outplacement service from her severance package. The general perception, she recalled, was that networking was the key element in the job search. So when she received a standard form letter by mail thanking her for her resume and interest with the distant promise that the company would be in touch, her next step in those cases was to network among colleagues and friends to see if they knew anyone who worked in those companies. But I was able to overcome the perception that solely netw orking not online listings were effective, and got three interviews off Ladders. One was the job that I received.A narrow focus on customer electronicsHancock began working in technology in her first position out of school in the late 80s an information-systems coordinator in a savings and loan. She has been involved in tech ever since. With an undergraduate degree in marketing from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), she remained focused on identifying a job in the consumer-electronics industry. It was only later that she added sales to her repertoire. While working in the merchandising department of a computer firm, buying software, peripherals and accessories, Hancock realized her personality was better-suited to sales, and she went to work for one of her companys suppliers, a hardware and software distributor. Based out of her home office in Virginia, she covered retail accounts for all of the East Coast and has bee n working in sales from home ever since. She had previously worked for a company that produced media-player and laptop accessories. So when she learned of the role of national sales manager for Internet business and sourcing network sales at Pandigital, Hancock knew the position would be a great match for her experience and skills.Based in Dublin, Calif., Pandigital boasts of a position the market-share leader in the production of digital picture frames, with more than 1 million units sold. But it was not only the fact that Pandigital is the manufacturer of a globally distributed consumer-electronics product that attracted Hancock to the position.Between 2002 and 2004, Hancock had worked at Digital River, where she led a sales force that focused on channel building e-commerce stores for online retailers. The job at Pandigital lets her exercise her digital expertise with a consumer-electronics product that is available online as well as retail outlets.. I have a lot of experience manag ing products and building Internet businesses. I was looking for something that might also tie into that. Hancock was brought on board at Pandigital to expand the companys Internet presence Typically, Pandigital has not sold on the Internet in the past except through their major retailers. We have a strong belief that in slower economic times consumers tend to gravitate toward the internet for a lot of their purchases because of the perceived value that you get.For others in the job market, she is confident that there are still positions in sales up for grabs It is a tough time out there. But I am still getting my base Ladders e-mails, and there are still plenty of positions. So, theyre out there and you just have to know what you want to do and really go out after it. But job seekers, she says, need to self-analyze, look into their career backgrounds and identify their transferable skills. If I am in sales in the financial-services industry, she said hypothetically, I am still in s ales. And I have been in business, and I understand business, and I am a consumer. I have a great interest in technology, and I keep up with technology. You really have to sell the fact that you can sell and have great account-management skills. A proven success record is what people are looking for. You really have to call that out. My advice is if you applying to these ads, your pitch cant be Dear Sir, Heres my resume. I am interested. It has to be I am the person you are looking for. I can do this. I have done it. I will do it.

What to Look for in a Job Offer Letter

What to Look for in a Job Offer LetterWhat to Look for in a Job Offer LetterJob searches can and often are exhausting and frustrating, so there is a high probability that you may want to sign any decent looking offer letter that comes your way. While most companies dont try to hide anything in their offer letters, there are a few things you need to review, verify, and consider before signing on the bottom line. Salary and Compensation Package While it may seem obvious that checking to make koranvers that the salary spelled out in an offer letter is what you expect it to be, many times exact salaries are leid discussed during the interview process. Companies often will offer a salary that they fully expect the candidate to negotiate. If you accept the first offer, you may be leaving money on the table. Thinking that you will be able to negotiate a higher salary once youve accepted the position is not a good strategy. Doing so may end up giving you a negative reputation within your new company. If a salary was discussed during your interviews and the offer letter salary is less than what you expected, reach out to the hiring manager and bring it to his attention. It could very well be a mistake, or it could be that the company is trying to get you for less. Either way, youll clear up any confusion, and youll find out whether the error will be corrected or if you need to departure negotiating. Make sure that your sales compensation program is spelled out in the offer letter. Many companies will not give out a copy of their compensation plan until someone is an employee. This is done to prevent their competitors from knowing their compensation plan. If the compensation plan is not detailed, call the hiring manager and ask for additional details. Arriving for work on your first day only to be surprised with a limiting and challenging compensation plan is not a great way to start a new career. Benefits Health Care benefits are often an essential part of a job . Unless you are an independent sales representative, your new position will include at least some benefits. These should be spelled out either in the offer letter or an attachment to the offer letter. You should read over the benefits package very carefully and understand that benefits are usually a non-negotiable part of the offer. Either you like and accept the benefits, or you dont. Make sure that if benefits are included in the position that the wait time is clearly spelled out. Many companies make or are obligated to make new hires wait 30, 60 or 90 days before they are eligible for benefits. If a wait is required, youll need to consider using COBRA or going without benefits for the duration of the wait time. Start Date This is probably an obvious item to check, but checking the employment start date is very important. For example, if you are in a tough financial situation and the offer letter states that your start date is 45 out or longer, you may need to either ask to h ave the start date moved up or keep on looking. If your start date is out further than youd like, you have a decision to make. You could accept the position and tighten your belt until the start date, or, you could accept and resume your job search. This is a tough choice since it is never a good idea to accept an offer then turn it down soon after. Professional networks are very powerful, and word can get around quickly. However, a company that offers you a position with a delayed start date must expect that some candidates will accept but will never start. In the end, you need to take care of yourself and your family first. If you get some negative backlash from networking sites or groups, view it as an opportunity to improve your networking skills and show the world that you are a valuable employee.

The Competition Has an Elevator Speech â€" Do You The Competition Has an Elevator Speech â€" Do You A WorkSphere survey released in September by Spherion Staffing Services reveals that, for the most part, employees can articulate what they do for a living in 30 seconds or less. Eighty-nine percent of employees feel confident in their ability to give an elevator speech, which suggests  that a large portion of the workforce is equipped with the right tools to win the next job, promotion, raise, or company award. Hiring managers have long lauded the elevator speech as the ticket to career advancement. Given that the majority of workers are able to eloquently describe their jobs in elevator pitches, how do individuals make their speeches  stand out from the crowd? And for job seekers who dont have an elevator speech at the ready, what are the right (and most important) things to highlight in the short span of the elevator speech? Titles Are Tough One stumbling block many people experience while attempting to streamline their speech is their job title. More than a quarter (27 percent) of employees think that their job title misrepresents their role at work, and 24 percent say job titles impact their job satisfaction. Its important for a title to be reflective of the job the employee is responsible for, says Spherion President Sandy Mazur. When job titles are representative of the role of the titleholder, the employee is more likely to be aware of where they fit in the overall picture of the company and compared to their peers in the industry. Quick Tips for a Better Elevator Speech Coupled with a well-fitting job title, the following specific techniques can  make one elevator pitch more engaging than the next, according to Mazur: Begin by leaving your audience wanting more: By saying something they dont expect, you will make them want to listen to what you have to say. Dont be formulaic: Being unpredictable and exciting can better showcase your personality and increase the likelihood of a future conversation. Talk with them, not at them: In general, people are more open to dialogue than lectures. Even if that means you dont get to every point in your speech, giving the other person room to ask a question or two ultimately makes the exchange more unique and memorable. Read your audience: If the person you are talking to isnt into the conversation or seems disinterested, dont force it. Rehearse, but dont sound rehearsed: The Spherion survey found that more than a fifth (21 percent) of employees find it challenging to explain what they do for a living. So, its important to know what you want to say and practice saying it, but when its time to deliver your elevator speech, repeating a memorized speech filled with jargon wont stand out. The anatomy of a successful speech starts with a clean slate. Because a typical elevator speech is about 30 seconds or less, its important to map out the essential information to describe who you are in the beginning of the process, says Mazur. Start with a blank piece of paper and outline everything you would want say if you had an unlimited amount of time. From there, you can start to edit your speech, eliminating any impertinent or unnecessary information until you have a clear, compact, 30-second speech. Remaining positive and excluding boring details provides fertile ground for a successful elevator speech.

What to Say (and Not Say) When Networking on LinkedIn

What to Say (and Not Say) When Networking on LinkedIn What to Say (and Not Say) When Networking on LinkedIn LinkedIn is one of the  world’s most powerful networking tools. Not only can we connect to people we know, we now have insight into who they’re connected to and who we may know through past roles, schools, and other organizations. Regardless of what you do as a career, in this day and age, networking on LinkedIn  is directly linked to your ability to be successful. I work at LinkedIn as part of their customer success team, and I’m also a career success coach with Vertucci Career Academy, so I know a lot about how to hire people and get people hired. During my years of training recruiters and hiring managers on how to reach out to candidates, and teaching candidates about how to network to elevate their career, I’ve learned some big dos and don’ts of  networking on LinkedIn. Follow these tips for networking on LinkedIn: 1. Do put yourself in their shoes. As the writer of a LinkedIn message, we often get too caught up in ourselves. “Hi, I’m Rebecca. I work at so-and-so company doing a, b, and c. I’d like to talk to you about blah blah blah.” We rarely make our messages about the person to whom we’re reaching out. My expert tip: Read the message you write as if you’re the one receiving it. How does it make you feel? Would you respond to this message? Does it feel templated or personal? Does it have clear next steps or a call-to-action? If you’re not likely to take action and respond, why would the recipient? 2. Don’t ask for favors. A LinkedIn message isn’t the place to pitch yourself as a candidate or to sell your products or services. Nor is it the right channel to ask for help. The purpose of an InMail is to introduce yourself and to try and get connected with someone who may be able to help you in your career or business. Keep it simple. My expert tip: The goal of this LinkedIn message is to set up a time to meet or talk in person. If you’re trying to do more than that, you’re missing the point, and you may be turning off the person to whom you’re reaching out. Avoid a sales pitch all together. 3. Do say why you’re reaching out. The biggest mistake I see in personalized messages on LinkedIn is people not being clear about why they’re reaching out. Do you both know someone? Did you used to work together? What do you have in common? Why do you want to talk to this person? My expert tip: Make it personal and be specific about why you’re reaching out to me and what our common connection is. Talk about me. Make me feel a little flattered. Let me know that my speaking with you would be helpful or useful to you in some way. Most people want to help other people when they can. 4. Don’t write your whole life story. Between 50 and 60 percent of LinkedIn’s traffic now comes from mobile devices, which means the majority of messages you send are read on a small mobile screen. Don’t make your recipient scroll and scroll. Keep your message short, sweet, and to the point. The goal of this message is to set up a time to chat- possibly in person or over the phone. That meeting is your chance to truly get to know each other and build rapport. A LinkedIn message is just a conduit to get that meeting agreed upon and scheduled. Focus on the goal at hand. My expert tip: Keep your message to three or four sentences. One or two short paragraphs only are necessary. I promise you can say all you need to in that space. Even if you’re in sales or recruiting or business development or a freelancer, I promise! (I train people how to do it every day!) 5. Do have a call to action. Again, what’s the purpose of this message? A meeting, a connection, a conversation? Make sure you end this message with clear steps on how to set that up. Do you want to chat this week? Say that. Do you want to meet for coffee next week? Let me know it. There’s no reason to send a message to anyone without a clear call-to-action. My expert tip: Simply end the message by saying you’d love to chat with them and ask when might work for them. Be specific. “If you have 15 to 20 minutes this week, I’d love to connect for coffee. My treat.” So in a nutshell, an ideal message on LinkedIn should start with one or two sentences explaining how you know the recipient and why you’re reaching out. Example: “My name is Rebecca, and we’re both graduates of the University of Central Florida. I see you’ve been in project management for a number of years, and I’m looking to learn more about that field.” Then follow up with a couple of sentences explaining why you’re reaching out and next steps. Example: “I’d love to pick your brain about how you got started in your field and what you like about it. Do you have some time this week to chat with me? I was thinking we could grab coffee or chat on the phone. Let me know which works best for you.” Keep it brief but be personal and genuine. Make it about them. The majority of people will happily help out those they know or have something in common with. However, if you come off as pushy, aloof, too salesy, impersonal, or unfriendly, we may opt out of responding back to you. Readers, how do you go about networking on LinkedIn? Tell us in the comments section below!

Verdon makes for great TV but shows downsides of collaboration

Verdon makes for great TV but shows downsides of collaboration Fosse/Verdon makes for great TV but shows downsides of collaboration Though all anyone can talk about is the final season of Game of Thrones, there is another show that has captivated my heart and DVR, but this one has just a bit more jazz hands. The show is Fosse/Verdon, which stars Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams, and it is about the super successful â€" though very dramatic (both onstage and off) â€" relationship of iconic choreographer Bob Fosse and showstopping dancer Gwen Verdon.Though like many FX series it comes with plenty of fun musical numbers, what the show really highlights, unlike in previous depictions of Fosse’s career, is the pivotal role Verdon played in making his many theatrical and cinematic masterpieces.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Verdon was a huge Broadway star, arguably one of the best dancer’s The Great White Way had ever and will ever have seen. And though she had already won a Tony (her first of four) â€" and had, in true Broadway theater legend history, been demanded by an audience to come back out on stage (in a towel no less, as she was in the middle of her quick change) after a show-stopping number in Can-Can â€" Fosse somehow became the household name while Verdon really never did. Well, at least not in every house.Whatever Lola wants … but didn’t get credit forBecause what Verdon did not get credit for, until FX and a producing team that includes Lin Manuel-Miranda came along, was that she was a very big part of the Fosse machine that earned him Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, and established him as one of the most important figures in not only choreography but American musical theater. After all, there are not many other choreographers that are forever, intrinsically-linked with one simple hand gesture (jazz hands) and a dramatic shoulder hunch except for maybe Twyla Tharpe. When they got together on the first production of Damn Yankees (him, the somewhat under doggish choreographer … her, the fresh Tony-winning darling of Broadway) she was the bigger star and, as the series shows, he had something more to prove. But the problem was, as with many a creative genius, Bob Fosse had a short fuse and couldn’t always get his vision past his frustrations. But Verdon could (and she was a genius too in her own right). As she says in episode one of the series to an anxious producer on the set of the then-troubled Cabaret film set (it would go on to win the Oscar for Best Picture): “I just know how to speak Bob. It’s my native tongue.”She could translate what he wanted and help him execute it. It was she that provided dancers with a backstory and therefore the motivation behind his, at the time, unconventional choreography. As we see in the first scene in the series when they meet, he had those steps (for the famed “Whatever Lola Wants” number from Damn Yankees) but she made them better and damn she made them look good.Verdon played pivotal, but uncredited ro les, with the film versions of  Sweet Charity and Cabaret. She did everything from choreography to film editing to providing costumes. And she managed to do all of this even as their marriage was falling apart due to Fosse’s widely known discretions and drug and alcohol addictions (though they actually never divorced just remained estranged but working together often for 30-something years).Writer Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) told The Atlantic:  Ã¢€œAt that point, we were still very much thinking we were making a show called  Fosse, and we left that meeting certain that the only way to tell this story was to make it a two-hander, because Bob’s story is incomplete without Gwen. There’s something about his relationship with Gwen, and that love story - however strange and twisted it was - that really fills out the picture of who he was. It felt that at every point in Bob’s career if you widen the angle just a bit, you find that she’s there - and that felt really import ant.”The man in frontNow, it was a different time. One in which a philandering womanizer but brilliant director and choreographer was still helmed as successful even though his sexual harassment of the chorus line dancers in his productions was well known and simply accepted (which we get a closer glimpse of in episode four). That wouldn’t fly today. However, a partnership, even with two named powerful people, where one gets more of the fame and glory could still happen. And because this was not the year 2019 (their partnership spans the 1950s through his death in 1987) it was going to be the man who got to be the face of it.Though Verdon, at least during the first half of her career, got to be the bigger stage star, she too felt constantly drawn to Fosse and their partnership. In the third episode, when she is frustrated by a nit-picky director for a play she did called Children! Children! (which would go on to be a disastrous failure), she goes back to work with Fosse on helpin g him edit Cabaret after refusing to the week before because he wasn’t being a devoted father.“We do see some troubling behavior with the women in the show,” said Levenson, “but the women aren’t able to voice the kind of things that women today, thankfully, are able to voice. If they had voiced them, nobody would have listened. Bob did overpower people with his will and personality, and one of the struggles is how does Gwen get out of that orbit, or can she?”It takes two to tangoBut really, what Fosse/Verdon beautifully articulates is the complexities of collaboration between two talented people. They both craved (and thrived) when they were serving an audience and that was what drove them as individuals and together. They both had traumatic childhoods and early adulthoods and that business that we call show was their escape and savior out of mediocre lives. And, perhaps, it was that passion and workmanship, above all, including being parents to their daughter Nicole (who serves as a producer on the series) that kept drawing them back together despite a failed romance. The collaboration may have had some missteps but Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse’s work never did.Fosse/Verdon  airs on Tuesdays at 10/9c on FX.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

3 Key Qualities of a Good Team Player

3 Key Qualities of a Good Team Player 3 Key Qualities of a Good Team Player Article by John C. Maxwell One of my all-time favorite movies is Remember the Titans. It traces the journey of the legendary 1971 high school team that won the Virginia state football championship and rose to become the No. 2 ranked high school squad in the country. But those victories alone were not what inspired the Hollywood film and provoked barbershop conversation decades later. The players attended a newly integrated high school in Alexandria, a town teeming with tension. That season, they conquered the racial divide among themselves and taught their fans to do the same. At a time when the city was ready to burn itself to the ground, the kids stepped out and changed attitudes among themselves and their community, Coach Herman Boone said in an interview included  with the movies DVD. They had embraced a teamwork attitude, each member learning to put aside his prejudice, mistrust, pride, and fear to become part of a greater whole. The shift from me to we (or in the Titans case, from us and them to just us) doesnt come naturally to everyone. It sure didnt for me. Thats why today were going to examine some qualities of a good team player and discuss how to adopt an attitude of collaboration. 1.  Talk It Out Coach Boone might have explicitly taught ball-handling strategies, but the more critical skill he imparted  to his players was communication. He made the young men ride together, room together, and train together. They resisted - except for one white player who crossed the color line and set the tone for everyone else. The steady wins on the field might have cracked the wall, but it was the locker room conversation that demolished it, Boone later said. Communicating means more than simply talking - and definitely more than just texting. To improve your connection with people, you must: - Be candid. Harboring hidden agendas, relaying messages through third parties, sugarcoating bad news, beating around the bush, and airing grievances on social media are surefire ways to sabotage group relations. - Be quick. If something is bothering you, address the problem within 24 hours so that a short-term frustration doesnt morph into a long-term grudge. - Be inclusive. Be discreet when needed, but otherwise share as much work-related information with your team as possible. Open communication increases trust, trust increases ownership, and ownership increases participation. 2.  Roll With It Trailblazing record producer Quincy Jones was once accused of being a sellout. He was big in the jazz world, rubbing elbows with the genres most renowned musicians, but he jumped into the pop scene in the 1980s, partnering with an emerging superstar by the name of Michael Jackson to the chagrin of jazz diehards. Jones shrugged them off. When I was 12 to 13 years old, we played everything - strip music, rhythm and blues, he told Context magazine. We played pop music, [polkas], and Sousa. We played every club in town - black, white, tennis. So Ive always had a range to draw from. Im not sure theres a better attribute to bring to a team than adaptability. What organization doesnt benefit from someone who is able to roll with financial ups and downs, pinch-hit for colleagues, adjust to changing operations, or shift strategies on the fly? These team players exhibit a nimbleness thats contagious, injecting a can-do spirit across an entire division. You can become more flexible in your thinking if you: -  Keep learning. For many years, I carried a notecard in my pocket and jotted down new information as I learned it. I got into the habit of looking for new material and skills to acquire. - Think beyond your role.  How many times have you heard a colleague whine, Thats not my job? Dont be that office bellyacher! Instead, learn a little bit about everyones duties, especially those higher up on the ladder than you. You never know when an opportunity will arise to save the day in a company crisis. - Think creatively. Look for unconventional solutions when you meet a challenge. Theres an expression that says a persons age can be determined by the degree of pain he experiences when he comes in contact with a new idea, Jones once said. The ones who dont react with fear are the really creative people. Lets try it, theyll say. Lets go there even if we blow it. 3.  Wave Your Pompoms Figuratively, of course. But consider the enthusiasm of sideline cheerleaders and how much energy they  bring to a stadium. I think about companies like Harley-Davidson, which went from owning 80 percent of its market to nearly going under in the early 1980s. Or General Motors sputtering in the 2000s, or Starbucks diluting itself with rapid, unsustainable expansion. In all three cases, the enthusiasm of the CEOs and employees rescued the companies from the brink of disaster and grew them into the juggernauts they are today. You dont need to be cheerleader-perky to bring energy into your workspace, but you can grow your enthusiasm by: - Showing a sense of urgency. Give yourself deadlines for completing the steps of a project, especially the mundane tasks youre putting off. - Taking on more. When someone asks you to do something, do it and then go beyond the assignment. -  Striving for excellence. Nothing breeds enthusiasm like the feeling of success that follows a job well done. Let that momentum carry you into the next project. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz perhaps said it best: When youre surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible. These qualities are merely a taste of the many attributes good team players bring to their organizations. Ill leave you, then, with one final task: Think about the people in your sphere. Consider everyone from the parking attendant to the CEO. Identify those who exhibit the best team qualities. Watch them. How do they put their attitudes into action? How do they inspire others to follow their examples? Teamwork doesnt come naturally for everybody, but remember those Titans and know that attitudes can change.
